Rack Inspections

SPAR representatives have the expertise to carry out visual audits of your pallet racking system and advise on its suitability with respect to current OH & S standards and Racking standards. This service call out and audit is charged which will be accompanied by a detailed site report on the state of the racking or Floors and our recommendations in the form of critical and non-critical issues relevant to your system. If the recommendations are met we are able to even install Load and Maintainence signs for the installation.

We would like to caution here that racks are structurally loaded components of steel and such should be professsionally checked by qualified or industry personnel. If your system is fairly new or there has been an minor accident you can check the system for visible damage as explained below and call us for a thorough check if you suspect more.

If the upright shows significant damage, or is twisted or contains splits or cracks, then replace it or splice a new section in. If the upright is damaged and is to be replaced, ensure the footplate is also replaced as it will also have sustained damage.

Check the condition of any splices. Ensure that they are in accordance with manufacturers technical specification.

Out of plumb racking is usually due to incorrect installation. Contact the manufacturer or installer.

Replace bent horizontal or diagonal braces. For bracing, the member deviation from a 1 m long straight edge in either plane should not exceed 10 mm.

Check that floor fixings are installed and are not damaged. Replace as required. If the floor fixing has been damaged, it is likely that the footplate will have also received damage and may need replacing.

Check that the bays conform to the MLL signs provided by the designer / installer, and that the racks have not been altered.

A large amount of beam deflection indicates overloading of the racking (the maximum deflection of a the beam should not exceed 1/200 of the box sections length). Where two beams connect at an upright, the beam connectors should remain reasonably parallel. If racking is overloaded or has occurred previously, the beam connectors will form a `V'. This is a quick and easy guide.

Check for obvious signs of beams being hit by a pallet or forklift. Damaged beams should be replaced.

Examine beams for damage and replace missing clips immediately. If clips are regularly being dislodged, contact the manufacturer or installer to determine why they are being dislodged and implement corrective action.

Check that beams have not popped out of the upright and are suspended on one end connector only.

If a beam has been hit and may only show minor damage, ensure welds are checked by a competent person for cracking.

If the answer to any of the questions above is a yes please have a specialist at SPAR look at the rack damage for a professional opinion for a small nominal fee if you dont go ahead with the minimal critical suggestions.
